Sri Lanka was formerly referred to as Ceylon whereas the official name is now the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka. It is situated in the Indian Ocean, south of the Bay of Bengal, which is divided from the Indian peninsula by the Gulf of Mannar and the Palk Strait. It has a maritime border with the Maldives on the southwest and India on the northwest.
